KPI Dashboard
Definition
A consolidated view of all key performance indicators relevant to a company's current strategic and operational objectives, updated at the frequency specified in each metric's definition. A KPI dashboard must distinguish between leading and lagging indicators, must show current period actuals against targets, and must show the trend across a minimum of the trailing three periods.
Common Misapplication
The most common misapplication is building a KPI dashboard that shows current period figures only without trend data. A single period snapshot cannot indicate whether performance is improving or deteriorating, which is the primary question a KPI dashboard must answer for management.
