North Star Metric
Definition
The single key performance indicator that the company has identified as most directly correlated with long-term value creation and that serves as the primary focus of operational management and team alignment. The north star metric is not a financial metric; it is an operational metric that leads financial performance. The north star metric must be defined in the metric definition document and reviewed at the board level at minimum quarterly.
Common Misapplication
The most common misapplication is selecting a north star metric that is easily moved in the short term by changing operational definitions or measurement periods rather than by genuinely improving customer value delivery. A north star metric that can be inflated without corresponding improvement in the underlying business is not a useful alignment tool.
