FFI GLOSSARY

Annual Operating Plan Cycle

Definition

The recurring process by which a company develops, approves, executes, monitors, and updates its annual operating plan. A complete annual operating plan cycle covers: strategic context review, draft plan development, assumption documentation, management review, board approval, execution, monthly variance tracking, quarterly reforecast, and year-end review.

Common Misapplication

The most common misapplication is beginning the planning cycle too late, resulting in a plan that is approved after the financial year has started and therefore cannot govern the period before approval.
