Operating Plan Amendment
Definition
A formal change to the approved annual operating plan, documented and approved by the same governance body that approved the original plan, specifying what is changing, the reason for the change, and the revised targets for affected periods. An operating plan amendment is distinct from a reforecast: an amendment changes the accountability reference; a reforecast updates the probability estimate without changing the accountability reference.
Common Misapplication
The most common misapplication is updating the annual operating plan informally to match actual performance, thereby eliminating the variance that should be reported and explained. An operating plan that is continuously amended to match actuals provides no accountability and no basis for assessing management performance.
