FFI GLOSSARY

TAM SAM SOM

Definition

Three market sizing measures used in financial and investor analysis. Total Addressable Market is the total revenue opportunity available if the company achieved one hundred percent market share of every potential customer. Serviceable Addressable Market is the portion of the total addressable market that the company's product can actually serve given its current capabilities and geographic reach. Serviceable Obtainable Market is the portion of the serviceable addressable market the company can realistically capture within a defined timeframe, connected to the financial model's revenue projections.

Common Misapplication

The most common misapplication is presenting a large total addressable market figure without demonstrating a credible path from the total addressable market to the serviceable obtainable market connected to the financial model. Investors discount total addressable market figures that are not supported by a bottom-up pathway to the revenue projections.
